Part Nine begins ...

Zaldaar spund, thowing meat and bits of meat everywhere. Zaldaar noticed his stomach growling. Maybe he could spear one of the steaks and have himself a snack.

Posted by: Solin Dec 18 2004, 06:05 AM

Solin sat in his corner, almost unaware of the chaos about him. He watched but for the most part he remained unconcerned as the meats were leaving him be for the most part. He idly kicked a slice of hound meat back towards the main tabbles and continued to ponder.

The man sighs and discards his fish in the general direction of a fleeing patron. He glances around searching for a new armament but finds none. A leap brings him on level with Celezar a second time. Instead of falling he hangs in the air.

“Tea?” the golden mask asks sipping from a cup that was not there a moment ago.

Posted by: Allerleirauh Dec 18 2004, 06:06 AM

Doll, seeing the meat come alive, hastened to protect Solin. Her magical barrier seemed to hold; she watched from behind it.

"I hate necromancers," Mirea said, cursing. Her arrows had no effect on the meats, but gave some of them a nicely hedgehog-like appearance. She pulled out her silver sword blade and swung it. The enchanted blade dispatched necromantic meats as neatly as it dispatched zombies... but the meat seemed to be ruined as food.

"Where's the General?" Mirea yelled to Doll, who frowned furiously at Mirea's lack of decorum. The General was not to be called that in front of other people. Besides, Doll didn't know where she was.

Upstairs, the General - Allerleirauh - was having a run of bad luck so great that it seemed almost prophetic. She had stumbled and fallen against a mirror, which had broken, cutting her arm. The cut was quickly healed but now she was trying to remove bloodstains from the expensive Hlaalu carpet. And the mirror itself seemed to cry out to her; she had a terrifying sensation of vertigo, as if she could see in the black matte surface that showed between patches of glass.

She turned the broken mirror to the wall, took a deep breath, and tried to calm down. Downstairs it sounded as if something important might be happening.

An aquatic figure rose out of the Odai river.

"Samuel smells tasties!" The Dreugh said.

Samuel the flying Dreugh flew into Hlaalu Manor, and began devouring flying slauterfish and mudcrab meats.

*Celezar winks at the man*

"Why yes, thank you. Celezar, would you like some tea?"

"That would be lovely, puppet."

"Make that extra tea, Celezar would like some as well."

"Enjoying the party, my good fellow?"

*Celezar laughed pleasantly, waving his hand over the carnage bellow*

Meanwhile , Reichi, the White Werewolf, was snacking o any piece of meat unlucky enough to cross his path. While Dar'Var attempted to escape the clucthes of Scrib-jerky gone wrong. That was armed with his crossbow.

'A change of plans, Shardie...' Maranda smiled... 'we shall not strike Loranna, instead we shall take one of her worshipers hostage... yeah, thats it, hostage...' The disturbing grin still had not left Maranda's face
'I do not know what has gotten into you over the past day, Maranda, but you seem different...' Shardie said...
'Perhaps I am', Maranda said, 'but such things can do silly things to people...' she found a nice Daedric Ruin... 'Come, we shall make ambush here...'

"Samuel sees tasties! Tasties everywhere!" Samuel exclaims.

The Dreugh's tentacles and claws are busy catching the lively meats, and bringing them towards his mouth.

The golden face cocks its head to one side and makes a faintly pleased “Ahh”

“The party is most magnificent my good fellow,” the figure says. Producing a second cup from seemingly nowhere he hands it to Celezar.

“If you’ll pardon me a moment…”

The man does a back flip, barely perturbing his cloak and lands on the table beneath. Flinging a saucer at a nearby slab of meat he dances his way towards the Dreugh.

"Where the heck are Aricyn, Allie, Liris ..." Loranna mutters after managing to calm down a few guests and sending them on their way.

A trip of scrib jerkies leaps for her; idly she grabs one and mutters "The Fist of Loranna shall show you flying!" and tosses it against the wall, whereupon it goes splat. Its brothers in arms soon get stomped upon.

" ... Did I really just say that?" Loranna asks herself. "Zounds, I miss that guy ..."

Posted by: Nalion Dec 18 2004, 06:13 AM

Seeing himself outnumbered against the fleshy assault, Nalion vanishes with an invisibility spell.
He reappears as he opens the door to the Mages Guild, dashes down the door, past an astonished Ranis Athris to the local Spellwright.

Tossing her some coins, he shouts "I need a spell, quickly!", giving her the details.
Soon, he holds a small parchment in his hand.
"I've got to test this." Nalion mumbles some words, then a purple flash engulfs a book and it vanishes....

"Great!" he exclaims and tosses some other coins for the book on the table, then heads back to the Manor as fast as possible.

Seeing that the fight is still going on, he casts the spell to the nearest guarsteak he finds....

"Meaty thingies everywhere,
relocate from here to there!"

The spell hit its target, and a book somewhere on Morrowind mainland near a cave of dogs got joined by a steak...

Posted by: w0nders Dec 18 2004, 06:13 AM

The guar meat stood watching as Samuel devoured countless waves of meat "The heathen....." He exclaimed dropping from Dantes shoulder and sprinting up the stairs screaming "Yipe! yipe! yipe! yipe!" Dante stood, confused, not really wanting to follow the hunk of meat but he did anyway, something was pulling him towards it.

Illidan lay on the floor wrestling with the slaughterfish, a battle in which he, was obviously losing.

Posted by: Anghardel67 Dec 18 2004, 06:14 AM

Azrael, having stood up when the meat items began to 'lose it', was now focused, and ready to eliminate a few of the bits. He eyed a small strip of scrib jerky, wielding a small, makeshift crossbow, and licked his lips, thinking: "If they are going to be disposed of, I might as well take full advantage of the situation--that jerky looks to be rather moist"

As the small piece of jerky shot a finger sandwich toothpick, that had been in a sweetroll, at one of the other guests, Azrael lunged for it, grabbing the morsel and wrestling the crossbow from it's. . .erm, from it. "AHA! Now, you will learn the price of insolence, little jerky fiend!", he exclaimed, stuffing the entire piece into his mouth, chewing quickly, hoping that the piece would not try to rip his uvula from the top of his throat.

The Dunmer swallowed, unsheathing his blade, looking around for more slabs of tender goodness to catch off guard.

*Celezar looks down upon the flying dreugh who happily muches upon his army, frowning a bit*

"Oh dear, this cant be accepted..."

"Indeed, we must teach this puppet proper manners at a party!"

*Celezar waves his hands and a length of scrib jerky leaps from the crowd bellow, binding Samuel's tentacles while a large hunk of warm guar meat smacks the dreugh in the back of the head*

Suddenly, the Dreugh gets knocked to the floor by a gang of violent meats.

Much earlier in the evening, Aricyn had been seen heading upstairs with a lovely young Breton lady. They were stopped, however, by a beautiful young Dunmer girl. Aricyn had taken both by the shoulder and discussed something earnestly with them, and, with slightly disgruntled looks from both women, they had all three retired upstairs.

Now, something loud crashed downstairs, and Aricyn awoke. The two ladies beside him slept soundly.

The old wolf, who with a full belly had been snoring at the foot of the bed, woke as well.

Aricyn stood up and reaching for a nearby bottle, filled his foul-tasting mouth with even fouler-tasting Dunmer liquor. Swishing it around for a moment, he spat it in the corner of the room.

"My mouth tastes terrible," he said to the wolf. "I really shouldn't drink this much."

Reichi, seeing Samuel, plight Jumped upon the large chunk of Guar meat and began munching.

Meanwhile, Dar'var , who was bound and gagged with scrib jerky. tried to get azrael's attention.

"Oh mistress Dusk and Dawn, I do say, enjoying the party?"

*Celezar laughs politely*

"Eat up now, we wouldnt want mistress Dusk and Dawn to go hungry, now would we, Celezar?"

"Indeed, eat up, puppet!"

"My master Sheogorath bids you good day, stay a while! Enjoy our wonderful variety of meats!"

*Celezar cackles coldly before hovering off to another section of the room*

“Dear friend, I think the was uncalled for,” the masked figure calls up to Celezar, his voice followed by a small assortment of the enchanted meats.

Looking back down at the Dreugh who was being covered in meats he laughs. His right hand suddenly holds a large table knife and he begins to lay into the surrounding meats… which still seem to ignore him. His clothing is impervious to the mess being made, it slides to the floor leaving the finery unstained.

Loranna replies by pulling the chicken that was trying to climb down the back of her dress off of her, smacking it into the wall a couple of times, muttering "Actually I am enjoying myself, thank you," and tossing the now stunned poultry at Celezar.

" ... And I think the baby is getting some enjoyment out of this too," she muses. "It's not exactly the whirlwind of fighting styles her father got to see but it's something ..."

"Tasties try to eat Samuel!" The Dreugh exclaims, rising off of the floor. "Samuel is a tasty to the tasties, Dreugh is a tasties tasty!"

The Dreugh flies out of the room as fast as his tentacles will allow, and dives down into the Odai river.

Posted by: Nalion Dec 18 2004, 06:25 AM

Nalion continues casting his modified recall spell at the meats assaulting him and his companions.

"I should have ordered the more massive version with the blast radius!" he mutters, his hands shooting purple bolts.
"But then, if one goes astray.... No, better aim carefully!"

"Meaty thingies hold your pace,
I'll bring you to another place."

Nalion seriously hopes no one inhabits the cave now...

"Oh, I'll bet you are indeed! Good day, mistress Dusk and Dawn!"

*As Celezar floats to another room, he scoops up a peace of guar meat, dipping it into a jar of necromatic condiment and flinging it over his shoulder where it springs to life in mid air, dropping itself in an unsuspecting man's pants. The man falls to the ground screaming, the animated guar meat commiting unspeakable attrocities to his nether regions*

Loranna sighs, and stalks off after Celezar.

All right; enough's enough, she says to Celezar. Thanks for the show, but let's call this a night.

Focusing her telekenetic power, Loranna tries to hold the jars of whatever's making the meats dance around closed, waiting to see how well Arynel's spell works before trying something more dramatic.

"Well, go exact your revenge" He said nudging the guar meat off his shoulder "You foul knave!" Corky yelled charging towards the man "HIYAAA!!!" He screamed delivering a devastating fly kick into the mans face, rendering him unconcious.

"Thankyou stranger, as you have helped me...now it is my duty to assist you in your adventures" Said corky looking up at Dante, "Well I don't know about th--" Corky interrupted with "pleeeeaaaassseeee?" Dante let a weak smile slide across his lips "fine" The guar meat jumped for joy before returning to Dante's shoulder.

Zaldaar fights his way to a wall. With a muttered spell he blasts through it. He fell out onto the street, several pieces of meat following him. Guards look his way in surprise. They stood there for a second, then waded in and chopped the meat to pieces. Hiding a smirk Zaldaar points to the house. "We're being attacked by meat. I think it's Shereograth's work."

The Khajiit hauled himself to his feet, and thanked Azrael. Before wondering where his crossbow was. "Uh..You have not seen Dar'Var's crossbow have you?" he asked.

In the background, Reichi ran about, devouring more stray meats.

"Crossbow?" Azrael replied, "Hmm, no. The only crossbow I've seen about was in the hands of a piece of jerky, and I doubt that it was yours". The Dunmer chuckled, before running off after a rather large slab of unidentifiable meat of the deadliest sort, wielding a spork, and a rather large clump of ash yams.

Focusing her telekenetic power, Loranna tries to plug up the jars of necromantic ointment with nearby plates.

*Celezar pondered a momment, torn between Arynel's words and Loranna's*

"I'll deal with this charming fellow, Celezar, you handle the barmaid."

"Very well, puppet."

*Celezar turns his head in Loranna's direction, though she is not visible from his postion*

"Tisk, tisk, what would master think if I ruined the fun now? Very well, mistress Dusk and Dawn, I dare not tempt the wrath of a godess, have my little game ruined..."

*Celezar frowns a bit and all the meat bellow drops where they stand, flopping like fish gasping for air before laying still, litering the floor everywhere*

*Celezar listens to Arynel's charming words intently*

"I beleive you've mistakin' me for Celezar, dear fellow, I'm afraid your charisma is of little worth here, you will find that the Golden Road offers so much more wisdom than the path you lead. Ah, look here, it seems Celezar has ended the fun, so be it. Ta, ta, for now! Oh, and do keep up on your poetry, I do so love to listen to your songs."

*With that, a small parade of remaining animated meat gathers bellow Celezar, forming into a meaty throne of sorts. As gently as a feather, Celezar hovers down and lands upon his throne, which then scurries accross the room, carrying him away to safety, whisking him away to some far and unsuspecting corner of Balmora*

Posted by: Arynel Dec 18 2004, 06:42 AM

"The golden road," Arynel muses. "I leave that path for others more worthy to walk."

The Breton smiles and walks off towards the corner of the room.

... Uhh, enough partying to last a good while, she thinks, glaring at Celezar to make sure he doesn't try anything else ...

As the meats and fleshes drop to the floor, dead once again, Nalion feels empty. The spellcasting had nearly drained his magicka resources.
He dropped himself on a chair in a shadowy corner, produced a potion of restore magicka and downed it. Then he closed his eyes for a moment, resting.

Reichi managed to roll himself behind a table and grabbed the ring from his coolar and placed it upon his finger. The transformation slowly reverse, and Reichi found himself with naught but his collar and ring on. He grabbed a fainted noble's pants and put them on, then headed for where he had left his stuff.

Posted by: w0nders Dec 18 2004, 06:49 AM

Dante and corky watch as Celezar rides away on his throne of meat "Shouldn't you be joining them?" Asked Dante, "No way, I'm a free guar now, well, as much as I can be" Dante made his way down the stairs "Indeed".

"Hey Dante! how are y--" Illidan stopped and stared at the piece of Guar meat on his shoulder "What is that?" He asked pointing to it "Corky" He exclaimed "he's going to be helping us on our adventures" Illidan looked from Dante to corky, then back again "Quite..."

All around the room, once animated meats lost their 'second winds', and fell to the floor again, limp, and soggy. The building filled with their smell, and a peculiar stench, reminiscent of Orcish Body Odor. Azrael noticed that some of those engaged in the battle had fallen to rest now, and were either sleeping soundly, or barely conscious at all. The Dunmer walked to the door, picking up small bits of meat along the way.

Spotting Loranna he assumed a more serious tone about himself, and called out for a moment: "Incarnate, I am leaving now; I would offer my help here, but I am in no shape to hoist these people up as I presently stand."

Dar'var found his pistol sized Crossbow and grinned. Before accidently unleashing a frostbloom bolt. Which struck the cleiling and left a beautiful icle. Dar'var decided to just stay away from the Icicle. Then looked about. "Where'd the werewolf go?" he mumbled.

Allerleirauh made a vague gesture with her hands.

"It's like the Void itself, not the sort of thing that can be easily explained. You have read Sermon 19, where Vehk talks about the founding of the Provisional House? Solunastra is much the same sort of thing. It exists within the space that is not a space; the guildhouse in Daggerfall is merely its shadow in the real world. Yet, because you are not Vehk, and I am not Vehk, and Solin and B and... all of us... are not Vehk, Solunastra is not Vehk's Provisional House. It is what we made it, when we called it into being, by gathering together in one place. In days past, Solunastra was a great palace. Or perhaps that is in days to come. I can't say, properly, here. But it existed before I found it; it wakens to the voices of heroes; it is named after the sun, moon, and star, and those are its livery."

She smiled. Her heartbeat was normal again; the mysterious anxiety she had felt before seemed to be fading. "Is that what you were asking?"

"Perhaps, I am not entirely sure." The Breton mused. "It seems you say it was once known, but lost, or something to that effect. You say also, it seems, that it is born, or perhaps revived, through our communion, but how can this be? I see a many threads here, but the whole story I cannot yet weave."

"Solunastra can never be lost; but it sleeps when it is not needed. It awakened when you brought Solin under the roof of the mundane Solunastra."

Allerleirauh rested her hand on Arynel's, for a moment, gently, and looked directly into his eyes. "You can remember, if you desire to. When you are truly awake, you will remember."

"You understand the Tower, I think. Men are towers too. You reach all the way through, from Oblivion to Aetherius, and into spaces far beyond. You are an axis and an egg. What we think and say here is only a small part of us. Imagine yourself as a very small piece, upon the chessboard of the world, and our souls gathered together like eagles overlooking a battle. You are greater than you can dream at this moment. Even I cannot grasp it. But some can - Vehk did - and even that wretched Mannimarco. To achieve CHIM is to not to become a god, necessarily; though most who achieve it choose that path. Perhaps that's the wrong path. My cicadas whisper to me that Vehk repeated the worst parts of Lorkhan's error."

She laughed. "It's what I mean when I see you crowned with stars. I see through you - to something enormous, something splendid beyond our dreams. I have seen you. Perhaps you have seen me. Do you remember?"

"When I first teach children to search for the Void, I ask them to look at the cracks," Allerleirauh said. "If you hold your head just right, sometimes you can see where things don't quite match up. You can see the cracks in stories, too. What race was the Nerevarine? Where was Tiber Septim born? Who was given the Mantella? There are cracks in you and me, too. It's there you should look, if you want your answers. What don't you remember? What makes no sense?

She turned to look at the servants clearing the room, and the reflection of candlelight moved across her eyes.

"Be careful, though. Some people who go prying at cracks just... break. And then they are broken forever. I think you will remember, when you want to know."

Loranna looks up at the piece of talking guar meat sitting on her shoulder, and wonders for a second if she should be stymied or bemused or anything.

Solin still sat in his corner, now completely oblivious to his surroundings. His red eyes gazed out over the remnants of the party, the servants picking up the mess they could, the patrons were regrouping. They didn’t see though. He might chat if talked to but, likely the conversation would be empty. It was as if he wasn’t there. In fact, he wasn’t. The mechanism spun faster now as he looked on. Netch leather covered his face, ash was raining. It drifted lightly in the air like the snow he had seen in Skyrim. The wheels turned and parted letting loose another gout of ash. It was his mechanism, he knew this but, the gears were not his.

The Mer sat on the floor, hands and chin resting on a knee with his other leg folded under. Ash was piling on the ground which was made of glass but it was solid and unbreakable. He watched, troubled, the gears were wobbling still… more now. Problems he could not fix. Several gears had shaken loose from their axels and lay scattered on the floor. The machine still ran.

Solin observed another cog stirring loose from its place. He watched as it slid down it’s axel until it was at the very edge, about to fall. Another problem he couldn’t solve he thought. It was past the end falling… but something stopped it. Solin was amazed, he held it in place with his right hand. He sighed. A bit of ash drifted through his vision, he looked on and pondered. A storm was coming, he felt it. Removing his hand from its restraining task he noticed that the gear did not continue its course but continued spinning hanging onto the axel. Solin sighed again, perhaps he should just let them all fall?

Wrothgarian Mountains, Temple of Kynareth

Mirror's plan: Aftermath

Mirror awoke in a place that was both strange and strangely familiar. Tiled ceilings; a smell of herbs, and fire, and something nasty, like the bottom of someone's satchel.

It was a temple, a temple of Kynareth. The priests of Kynareth were the greatest physicians in Tamriel, the only temple that would treat those who weren't members of their temple.

Had he been sick? They must have healed him, then. He felt well enough.

Mirror sat up and found that the motion made him lightheaded.

The sound of movement brought a priest to the room. He was an older man, a Breton, with a very large nose.

"Good, you're awake, I'm glad I caught you," the priest said. "Don't worry about paying for your care, whoever left you here left a large donation, more than enough to cover our expenses. The healing process is as complete as we could make it, you shouldn't have too many residual problems. I'm sorry we weren't able to restore your body completely, but regrowing a limb is beyond the scope of our magics. If only your friend had left the limb with you."

"What?" Mirror asked, not following half of what the priest said. The ringing in his ears had not gone away. He was starting to recall images, wavy as if viewed through water. Where was Ciel right now? The question suddenly seemed of tremendous importance.

"You don't know," the priest said. "Oh dear. Wait right here, don't move. We have a specialist for these matters."

Mirror waited until the priest had left, then ignored the prohibition. A terrible thought was throbbing at the edge of his memory, trying to burst through into waking consciousness. He needed to run, the way he always did, to sort himself out. To get his blood pumping properly. What was wrong with his circulation? He must have lost a lot of blood. Or perhaps he had been lying on his back a long time.

Mirror swung his legs over the edge of the bed. That was when he first noticed. He had only one foot. His right leg terminated halfway down his shin.

He was hanging on to the bed rail and gasping when a priestess of Kynareth entered the room, followed by the priest who had left earlier. The priestess was a cosy looking woman, well-padded, motherly. She put her arms around him.

Much, much later, he asked, "There's nothing else you can do?"

"We've been over this, my child. You need to rest, let your mind recover as well as your body."

"I can't rest, I have to find someone. I have to know what happened to him."

He pushed them aside, and rose, shaking. It wasn't as easy as he had expected. There was no way he could build up the speed to enter the Void like this. He wondered where his friends were, if Dragon had died along with Ciel, if Skein was watching him now and laughing. That was surely it. Now that he could no longer run fast enough to enter the Void, he wasn't a Void Ranger, was he? He had no friends. They had sent Leseth after him to exact payment for his infractions, expelled him from the Guild, and left him here to die, or maybe to hobble off to some other life. He wasn't Mirror anymore. He was just Tris Gaerington, the biggest idiot alive. Or mostly alive.

"There is one more thing we can do for you," the priest said.

The priest held out a pair of crutches. Tris wanted to cry at the sight. But he didn't.

Later, he stood outside, straining with every ounce of flesh, all his blood, all his bone, all his breath, to enter the Void. Tris had a brief flash of memory, of his older sister teasing him as a child, telling him that if he could kiss his elbow, his wish would come true. The Void was as near as his elbow, and every bit as unreachable.

That was when the tears came.

Daggerfall:

Skein was waiting for Arynel and Allerleirauh at the Guild house.

"Mirror's in trouble," she said. "But my spiders say we mustn't go to him."

"Skein, what?"

"He's in terrible pain," Skein said. "But all the paths are the same. If any of us go to him now, he will die by his own hand."

Posted by: Arynel Dec 18 2004, 08:48 AM

"I would try to persuade him," Arynel began. "No, there is no prison stronger than the one you build yourself. It is he that holds the key to this, not I."

The Breton lowers himself into a chair.

"See the wandering star, see the meandering light, where does it go? I know not, and not do I know."

Solin had watched it for sometime. It was not the same as before… it still spun and wobbled but it was different. He could not decide what to do with it. Remove it as it was going to or put it back into place? It wouldn’t be the same as before. He sighed again, there wasn’t anything he could do at the moment, he left it to sort itself.

The Dunmer’s eyes snapped open. He was in the manner house again. An instant past and Solin was gone. The lingering effect of the blinding flash of white light was the only tale-tell sign that he had been there a moment before.

Doll gasped. She had been almost dozing, her eyes half-closed. Now Solin was gone.

Ignoring the General's orders, she ventured into the Void to look for Solin. She could not find him. She returned to the party.

Mirea was waiting for her, hands on hips.

"Little Miss Perfect is disobeying the General," Mirea said. "What's the world coming to?"

Doll ignored her.

She hoped the strange Dunmer would find what he was looking for. She hoped he wouldn't get caught by whatever had caught Arynel.

She closes her eyes, but swiftly realizes she's hit that magical point where she's too tired to sleep. She hazily wonders what the proper prayer of thanks is to Azura for letting her reach this state of consciousness, then looks down at her belly for a moment, wondering if Sen Yedda is asleep or not and wishing she could trade places for a moment.

I should ... eat something, Loranna decides, wandering over to the main feast table in the front hall of the Hlaalu manor. By now even this room has become more or less empty, most of the food on the floor instead of on platters. However, some saltrice and even a couple sweetrolls remain suitable for consumption, and there's even a pitcher of semi-cool water left. Loranna sits down and slowly helps herself to a late night snack.

Loranna was joined by a young girl she had seen at a distance, following her train, but never met.

The girl looked about twelve years old; she had the height and build of a Breton, but very fair skin, almond shaped brown eyes, and hair of an absolute blackness and smoothness that reflected light like a bird's wing.

Without saying a word, she took out a comb and began to brush Loranna's hair out. Her little face was cheerful enough, but her demeanor seemed sad and weary.

"I had another name once, but I don't have to use it anymore, because I'm not that person. That's what the General said. She hasn't talked to you about Solin?  Solin has Void Sickness... or that's what I thought... but now I think it may be something else."

*

Loranna ducks a little. " ... The General and I talk about a lot of stuff," she says quietly. "Solin though only got mentioned in passing ... and sad to say, I probably wasn't paying full attention to what she said about him, being worried about a whole mess of other things ..."

" ... Don't have to use it? But you could if you wanted to, yes?" Loranna asks, her mind wondering what Void Sickness must feel like and finding it to be something not really fun to imagine.

"The other me wasn't a very nice person, and no one respected her," Doll said. "Doll is someone new. That's why I'm so upset about this. Dragon has been saying all along I was too young to go on missions, and he let me go on one, and it's already all ruined. I don't even know where Solin is and I can't even get home safely. I made people worry about me and I acted like a stupid child, and I didn't accomplish anything."

Loranna feels her eyes moisten and a sad smile comes to her lips ...

"I understand how that feels, dear," she says quietly, feeling conflicting urges rise up in her - part of her wanting to take Doll in her arms and rock her gently, saying it will be all right, and part of her afraid that she'd be overstepping her bounds if she did, especially with one of Allie's friends - and such a young girl at that ...

" ... Would you ... like to talk about it?" Loranna asks slowly, almost hesitantly. "Some times, it helps to say things aloud; helps to clear your mind, let you see that things in a different light ... plus, a friendly ear is always a nice thing to have ..."

Doll smiled; unlike her earlier tiny smile, this was a real smile, and it made her almond-shaped eyes almost disappear with crinkles. "That's so sweet! But I think I already feel better from playing with your hair. I used to love doing all the other girls' hair, it's the one thing I really miss about my old life."

" ... All right then; I'll sit and let you play with my hair," she says. "You can do whatever you like, well other than cut it - I do rather like my hair, hehe."

"They are, aren't they?" Loranna agrees, relaxing and letting Doll find her own sense of inner peace for now.

I'm the incarnate of Azura, have caused the inadvertant death of hundreds, killed my mother with my own two hands, and am probably going to end up plunging Morrowind into a maelstrom of chaos before dying while giving birth, she thinks to herself. Yet, I can at least help this young girl find some sense of relaxation from her worries just by sitting here and letting her play with my hair - and Azura bless us both, it feels good, in several ways ...

Sigh ... I'm still human, as well as a monster, she thinks happily. I'm still me - and maybe things will work out in the end after all.

Zaldaar sat down and set his feet up on the table. The place was still covered with meat, though several servants had arrived and started cleaning. Zaldaar looked over at Loranna and Doll. He smiled, reminissing about the past. He sighed something else he'd never have.

Nalion opens his eyes and stifles a yawn, then stretches in the chair.
"I must have fallen asleep..." he mutters, then he rises.

His stomach begins to rumble and so he heads over to the food tables. Servants are busy cleaning up the mess from the fight with the crazy meats, scurrying from here to there with baskets and brooms.

"No meats today for me." the Breton mage says, shuddering a bit, choosing a cold ash yam and some hackle-lo leafs, then grabbing one of the few sweetrolls that were still there. He sat down nearby and began to eat.

Morrowind, close to Red Mountain

A burly, unknown man enters a room, in a light, but durable red, armor, a black hooded cloak, and a crimson, red mask.

At the far end of the room, sits a figure shrouded in darkness

The muscular, masked man kneels down, pulls back his hood, and bows his head in admirable respect.

“My, Lord.” says the masked man, in a thundering, deep voice.

“The time has come.” The figure replied. “This incarnate has outstayed her welcome.”

The man in the crimson mask, nodded slightly in acknowledgement.

“Find the so called incarnate, dispose of her, and bring me her heart.” The figure says simply. "But be wary. Others are trying to do what I wish you to. Let them… IF they can succeed. If they fail, kill the incarnate and them as well."

In the darkness of the room, the sitting, figure smiles a crooked smile, knowing that his best servant wouldn’t fail him.

The kneeling man stands up, puts his hood back on, and heads for the door. His pace quick, his manner confident. You would think someone sent to kill a God wouldn’t be so eager, but this man isn’t someone, he IS the best. Failure doesn’t even cross his mind, not even for a millisecond.

The meats had scared the nobles, and everyone else out of their wits. After things settled down Teleran moved across the room, removing the trinkets some of the nobles had forgotten in their haste. His cloak was now noticeably heavier from the jewels and gold concealed in its pockets. He went and sat down at the table and took a bite of one of the sweetrolls remaining.

'I wonder why he rolled his eyes there. He answered, then he rolled his eyes at something else, or am I the object of derision.' Teleran thought. 'That tune is too soft now to follow with a drum.'

"Illidan, how about we play something more lively, wake the place up! This is a party after all."

'I wonder what time it is, it can't be that late, I still feel perfestly wakeful. How long has it been since the battle with the Fire Monarchs? I should've felt tired after that at least.'

One attendant says "Please my Lady, try to get some rest ..."

Loranna nods numbly, noting Erenius and giving him a tired wave and smile before slumping ...

As Aricyn came down the stepswith the summons to prepare for the next stage of the travel, Nalion quickly gulps down the last bit of the sweetroll he was munching on. He crosses over to the chair where he sat before and takes his staff.

Carrying only light equipment, Nalion was ready to accompany the party to wherever they might be headed.

*Erenius nods back as he finishes looking over the last cart*

"All should hold well," Erenius mumbles as he lets the Dunmer helping him prepare the carts go.

*Erenius then looks about and walks about, wonderring precisely which major location would be next*

"Oh, a pity there was not more excitement." Arynel mused.

The Breton paused.

"As for your question, I have never been to Oblivion myself, so I do not know how one would go there. I have heard the Psijics have a place, the dreaming cave, that they use. Seeing as I am not one of their fold, I do not know much about it, or even if it exists."

"Hm...wonder what i missed.." he mumbled.

Meanwhile, Dar'Var was repairing and cleaning his Crossbow.

A little rest allows Loranna to realize that there remain things she needs to take care off still back in Balmora - things which a large party of people would prove a little less than helpful in completing.

So, once the party is assembled, and a good ways out of Balmora, Loranna calls for a halt.

" ... Dears, there's ... a few things I need to take care of," she says, looking over her followers. "Things that I have to do on my own. I thank you for what you've done for me so far and what you'll do for me soon, but right this moment we need to part ways for a spell - a few days, nothing more."

"In the meantime, please - rest yourselves, or pursue other matters. There is still a fair bit ahead of us, as we all know, and we could use whatever advance knowledge we can get of the obstacles coming our way. Be wary, though, for our enemies are still out there ..."

"Good luck to you all, and may the following Dusks and Dawns see you each safe and sound, until it's time for us to reunite and continue this pilgramage."

Posted by: stratigo Dec 19 2004, 07:35 AM

"Finally." Zaldaar muttered. He had been waiting for this moment for a few days. He dissapeared inconspiciously.

Zaldaar walked up to the other Dunmer. The dunmer turned and greeted Zaldaar, "What took you so long?". Zaldaar smiled, "I was... delayed." The dunmer laughed, "Yes I saw that little fiasco. Is it all going down the correct path?" Zaldaar nodded, "More or less." The dunmer laughed again. Zaldaar turned and dissapeared again.

"Well, i dunno about YOU folk. But im heading on up to Ghost gate..." Reichi said and started walking off towards Ghostgate. Dar'var, decided he would too, and took off at a dead run. Within secound all that was seen off him was a dust cloud fading into the Distance.

Reichi continued towards Ghostgate at a walk.

Silently, the Breton walks out the door...

Posted by: w0nders Dec 19 2004, 07:55 AM

Seeing Reichi and Dar'var start to head towards Ghostgate Dante thinks that it would be a good idea "Illidan, c'mon...we're heading to ghostgate" Dante and Illidan started to make their way towards the foyada.

Posted by: Teleran Dec 19 2004, 08:04 AM

When Illidan and Dante followed Reichi out Teleran figured that the party was moving outside so he followed the them until they reached the edge of Balmora.

He then turned back sprinted to the thieves guild and gave the amulet to Habasi as well as the almost all of his take from the party, keeping only a one piece that appeared heavily enchanted and would not encumber him as he fought.

Then he sprinted down the path trying to catch up with Dante and Illidan before they reached the foyada.

Such are the ways of gods...

I can't complain, though, nor can anyone here. I nod in consent to what Loranna wishes, though I certainly want to know what's going on. With a god possessing her, I would think Azura would bestow limitless boundaries on Loranna... but maybe not...

I turn around and leave before the crowd even begins to disperse. I go to the Balmora Mages Guild and walk inside. I trade a diamond for a certain scroll, then walk outside and walk next door. I walk up to Wayn and hand him a hammer, telling him I will return shortly.

I walk out the door and head to my house. I head upstairs, open the dresser, and put my clothes and custom glass armor inside. I pull out a suit of black commoner's clothes, then a suit of normal glass armor. I put on the clothes, then the armor and toss the helm onto my bed. I close the dresser and walk to a mirror. I reach up and take out my two earrings, then walk back to the helm. I pick it up and walk outside.

I head back to the Fighter's Guild, where Wayn has amazingly repaired the sword already (ooc: not so subtle hint at repair times). I put the blade in its scabbard and head outside, where I see some people wandering off, including someone I had seen before; Teleran, I believe his name was.

Curious, I follow from a distance...

Reichi reached the intersection where the Foyada met the road from Pelagiad to Balmora. He turned left and headed up the Foyada to Ghostgate. After a hour or so...a shrine loomed in the distance.

A Daedric shrine.

Posted by: Meridia Dec 19 2004, 08:14 AM

'So, why are we at this shrine?'
'He might pass this way... no... if he is following her, he will pass this way...' Maranda replied, a dirty smile on her face, 'then we will ambush him, and then I can...'
'Be quiet, Maranda,' Shadie said, 'Someone is comming!'
'Oh, it could be him... let us hide... Shardie, go tell the worshipers in the Shrine to prepare themselves for battle, and bring all the Daedra they can find'

Posted by: w0nders Dec 19 2004, 08:15 AM

Dante and Illidan walked on either side of Reichi "looks like we're getting close eh?" Illidan asked "Yes, that sure didn't take as long as I would of expected it to of" Replied Dante.

"Hey guys, wanna go Daedra hunting for a little while?" Dante asked the companions around him.

Posted by: Aki Dec 19 2004, 08:18 AM

"Heh, sure." Reichi said, pulling the Dagger of Senses from his hip and going into a crouch, he then ran towards one of the random block of Daedric stone that was jumbled around the Shrine. Those blocks always baffled Reichi, were they intentional ? Or were all the shrines in morrowind broken?

Reichi pushed the thought from his mind and began to sneak about. Making little to no sound.

"It only counts as Daedra hunting if you get to face any, and I'm going in first!" Teleran yelled as he came up the road and ran past Dante toward the Daedric shrine. "Have fun picking over the scraps!"

"Oh no not this again!" Shouted Dante preparing himself against the oncoming Flame Monarch "I'm ready for him this time" Exclaimed Illidan tightening his grip on the dagger.

Dante ran into a maze like junction formed by several fallen rocks, He ran down a line of rubble and turned, his sword held firmly in his hand, "I hope I can handle the heat better this time" He muttered to himself, taking on a firmer pose.

Posted by: Meridia Dec 19 2004, 08:34 AM

Seeing Reichi, Maranda yelled, 'How dare you try and ambush my friends! For that, even if you are a friend of mine, you shall pay dearly! FLamey, stay on this hill and launch Lava spells at them!'
ROAR was the satisfied reply... Shardie, the Cultists and the other Daedra were now aware of the enemy presence, and prepared for battle...

Posted by: w0nders Dec 19 2004, 08:39 AM

Dante watched as Flamey unleashed waves of lava upon the group, "Damnit!" he yelled winding around some rubble and coming face to face with a Dremora, he shortly hacked the thing to bits and was making his way up behind Maranda.

Illidan however was trying to find something easier to defeat than the monstrous flamey ontop of the hill.

Posted by: Aki Dec 19 2004, 08:45 AM

Reichi mumbled curses as Fire washed over the rock he was behind. A Dremora came around the rock, swinging a Daedric Shortsword. Reichi avoided the swing and slashed his blade across the dremora's throat. Tearing its ashen skin and spilling the lava-like blood of the Dremora. The blood was only lava-like in apearance though. No heat came from it. Reichi then pondered how to deal with Flame Monarch...he grabed the Daedric shortblade and sheathed his dagger. "This should hold the heat well enough.."

Posted by: Glensather Dec 19 2004, 08:46 AM

I pick up speed, running past Teleran and drawing my blade. At the same time, I put a hand in front of me and charge magicka into it. I come across a Dremora, which meets his maker as I grasp his face, casting an Energy Blast spell as I do so.

Posted by: Teleran Dec 19 2004, 08:47 AM

'Is that monster up there the same one we faced at the mines? Oh well we'll send it back to Oblivion, just like last time!'

'What's this, more creatures are pouring from the shrine. This will be a great battle. Yes, this battle will be wondrous.' Teleran flicked out his concealed blades and sent Nehtayem through the air seeking targets. As he charged toward the shrine his thoughts turned only to the battle, anything else was irrelevant. Nehtayem clove through a Clannfear as he leapt into the midst of the group.

Posted by: Meridia Dec 19 2004, 08:51 AM

Hmm, a pincer attack... thought Maranda, 'Flamey, take care of the Warewolf! I shall take out the one comming behind us!'
ROAR!
Shardie was shocked... but all that training she had learnt now came in handy... she made her way towards the one with the flying sword... drawing her Ebony Longsword, and shield to help protect herself...

Posted by: Aki Dec 19 2004, 08:51 AM

Reichi ran out from behind the rock and flung the shortblade at flamely, hoping the blade would survive the heat long enough to actually injure the beast. He then charged into a group of cultists, there were about five of them. Drawing the Dagger of Senses, he took the ffirst down with upward chop that left a gash rusnning from the cultist's lower stomach to his forehead. Reichi continued to engage the cultists. the dagger's sense increasing enchantment increasing the scent of blood with ever strike. The smell was almost maddening.

Posted by: w0nders Dec 19 2004, 08:57 AM

Dante continued up the hill, his sword held firmly within his two hands Looks like the leader is gonna be up here He thinks taking a well positioned step up the mountain side Shouldn't be much trouble Dante.. He neared the top of the hill I hope your right..

Meanwhile, Illidan had spotted a small scamp and charged towards it "AAAaaaahhhhh!!!!" The scamp quickly knocked Illidan to the ground and climbed ontop of him, Illidan pushed the scamp off in disgust and stabbed it multiple times in the heart.

Posted by: Teleran Dec 19 2004, 08:59 AM

Teleran was lost in the midst of a group of lesser daedra. Then the daedra around him suddenly vanished, sent back to Oblivion. with the space cleared around him he charged for the nearest cultist and ripped out their throat. Then he turned on another daedra, a scamp this time and tore it asunder.

No longer was he cognizant of the events surrounding the battle as he cut through the daedra as one possessed. He was hit a warhammer swung by one of the cultists and fell to the ground. He snarled as he leapt to his feet one dagger breaking the shaft and the other going through the cultist and emerging from the other side. He flung the cultist aside and continued through the group.

Nehtayem fell to the ground, unheeded by its master.

Posted by: Glensather Dec 19 2004, 09:02 AM

A flash of light and a slicing sound is all that's needed to know that I just killed two scamps. I don't even waste my magicka on the pathetic creatures after that, instead stabbing one briefly and letting my sword's magic do the rest. It's easy to kill the scamps this way as I reach a Dremora Lord wielding a Daedric Wakizashi.

I thrust at him, but he deflects the blow. I use the momentum from the Daedra's strength to whirl, sending a roundhouse kick to his head. He staggers, but holds his own before I have another chance to attack. An overhead swing from the Dremora misses badly, and I use his overshot to duck under and shoulder rush him, sending him to the ground. I shove my sword into his left eye and take his wakizashi.

I stand up and turn around to face another Daedra, this time a Clannfear. I cut high with my sword, then thrust with the normal Wakizashi. Both blades pass through effortlessly, and as I pull the non-magical sword out, it brings the Daera's Heart with it.

With a snarl he threw himself at Shardie. His daggers became a blur in front of him striking left and right, slashing up then down seeking the flesh of the one who had challenged him. Dante used his sword to knock back one weakening spell at the Dremora but the other one connected as he slumped to one knee, he looked up watching as Maranda charged towards him. He raised his sword in a defensive position and waited for what was about to happen.

Illidan meanwhile found another scamp to slaughter, which he did... He looked up at the hillside to see Dante on a knee as Maranda charged towards him "Dante!!" He screamed running as fast as he could towards the hill.

I cut down another Clannfear as I notice that the hore of Daera are actually starting to thin out. About seven or so Dremora get into a rank-and-file line and use their spears to edge me backward. Eventually, I'm behind Dante as Maranda charges him, but my attention becomes divided.

I quickly think of a spell. One comes to mind: Flame Wall. Charging my Fire Magicka, I bring a seven-foot high wall of fire stretching into twelve feet in both directions. I then turn around and face Maranda, helping Dante up.

Reichi grunted as a longsword found itself in his left arm. "Freaking S'wit!" he yelled and proceeded to stab the owner, a cultist, multiple times in the face with his dagger. Upon the cultitist's collaspe, he pulled the blade from his arm and turned to face the other cultist. Who had been fixed a misfire with her crossbow. She managed to fixe it in time to fire upon Reichi once as he charged at her, the dart stuck into , but didn't pass through, Reichi's left pauldron. The dagger ofsenses however, embeded itself in the cultist's heart.

Pulling the dagger from the final cultist, Reichi looked about for some Daedra to fight.

"Fine, you want to fight?" I whisper. "Then let's go,"

I charge the Daedra.

Teleran leapt aside to avoid the sword, but he was not quite quick enough and it sliced through his cloak, tearing it from his shoulders. Teleran let out a wordless howl as he reversed direction and jumped over Shardie, his daggers slash downwards as he flies overhead. He leaps backward as he lands then dives back towards Shardie, resuming his relentless assault.

Seeing that Maranda seems to be the ringleader of this troupe, and armed with a rather, fine looking sword. Reichi decided this would be his next target. So the Dunmer began running up the hill Maranda was atop, from the opposite side of the wall of fire. Reaching the top, he readied the Dagger of Senses.

Damn, i need to get a new blade, the increasing senses on strike is now getting annoying, he thought. Seeing the Daedric shortblade from before, he plans on later grabbing that. Then charged Maranda, dagger readied for a thrusting attacking.

Posted by: Meridia Dec 19 2004, 09:40 AM

Shardie continued to block the attacks, whilst swinging her sword to cause damage to Teleran... whilst her first blow hit, he was quite good at avoiding them...

Flamey slashed his flame sword down apon Tharivor, who parried the blow...

A thrust... thought Maranda, turning around... but too late, the blade struck her arm... the pain was searing, but using her remaining arm, she swung the sword towards Reichi, at least hoping to get one blow on...

Posted by: Aki Dec 19 2004, 09:43 AM

Maranda's swing caught reichi in the chest, however, he had moved with the blow, deflecting most of the blow, and leaving a large gash in his armor. Reichi backed off and thought up a new strategy, then put it to work. He raced back towards Maranda, struck again, and retreated out of reach.

Hit 'n run..

Shardie's sword was trapped in Teleran's two daggars, and looking to the side, she saw Maranda dissapear... dropped her sword, and casted her recall spell, ending up at her house in Ald'urun...

The spell hit Flamey but the effect only made him madder. He struck Tharivor heavily with his blade, forcing him to the ground... pulling his sword up for the final blow, the summon ended, and Flamey returned home...

Before he got halfway he saw a glint of stahlrim. 'Nehtayem,' he thought as he came to himself and collapsed beside it on the ground.

"Damnit! That fetcher got away!" Reichi cursed. Then looked to Dante. "You okay man?"

Seeing Maranda dissapear, Illidan threw down his staff and ran over to Dante "Dante stay awake! somebody! quickly! help me get him to a healer!" Illidan's voice was shakey with fear and panic, tears running down his face.

I sit up groggily, my head spinning and my body burning. As I shake my head, my vision suddenly isn't obscured by the two green lenses of my armor. Looking around, I see the two halves of the Glass Helm. I sigh, but ignore it; it's not worth traveling so far just to repair the helm as it turns into sand. I drink a magicka potion as I grasp the Black Blade in my left hand.

I sheath my blade and put my newly-acquired one on my back, then walk over to Teleran. I consider killing him for a brief moment before casting a telekenesis spell on him, lifting him into the air, then to the same with his Stahlrim sword, holding it in my right hand. I begin walking to Ghostgate...

"heres your sword Dante" Said Illidan passing him his sword, Dante grabbed the blade with a blood soaked Gauntlet and pressed the hilt against his chest.

Illidan picked up his brother and looked down the hill, he could faintly make out Ghostgate, yet, the wall of fire was still blocking his way "Damnit! I have no time to go around!" He yelled jumping through the fire wall and uneasily running down the hill towards ghostgate, the whole time tears still running down his face.

Reichi sheathed his Dagger, and grabed the Daedric Shortsword he had thrown earlier. Then followed after the group as they made for Ghostgate again.

Upon arriving at ghostgate Illidan bursts through the door to the tower of Dusk yelling "Quickly! we need a healer!" Many people accompnied them into a small room, They layed Dante on a bed and called in some priests.

The last thing Illidan saw was Dante's blank and emotionless face staring back at him as the door was thrust shut.

Reichi wandering into the tower of Dusk. Musing over how funny it was that The two tower, while built by the Tribunal temple, were named after the two things that composed The Daedric Pirnce(ess) Azura's Sphere. Meanwhile, in a room somewhere in the tower. Dar'Var was getting a well-deserved rest.

'Is she ok?'
'A pilgrim found her in the Puzzle Canal... seriously wounded...'
'So do we know who she is?'
'Archcannon! We had no idea you were here!'
'Let me see that ring... ah yes, I recognise this insignia... get me when she awakens...'
'Yes, your grace...'
Maranda once more fell uncontious...

Morrowind, close to Maar Gan

Wrapped up in a wave of magicka, the masked man sped from Red Mountain to Maar Gan. As he ran he thought about his task. He made no mistake thinking that killing a God would be problematic, but that didn’t matter to him. If he had to kill a whole town to finish his objective he would. Lives, no matter how many, mean nothing to him.

That fact got him thinking. There was very little that he did care about. Other people, Nirn, his own well being; it all got put to the side for his Lord.

“My name,” he thought. “Even my name.”

Names were about as important, to him, as the dirt, a scamp walked on. But there was one name he cared about, one name he embraced. It was the name his Lord liked to call him, his Left Hand. His Lord was left handed and he considered, him his best, and most trusted servant, so it was only fitting to call him that. His Lord once said that if he lost his left hand he would lose his will to live.

Underneath his mask, Left Hand lets out a little grin. He would not disappoint his Lord; his left hand would NOT fail him. He had served his Lord for thousands of years. Today was another day, this task another task like millions before it, and killing was just like breathing to Left Hand.

*The lull in the party allowed Orion to catch some much needed rest but a tugging on his arm quickly awakened him.*

"Wha?...huh?...who are you?"

*He glared down at a young Nordic boy of about 11 years of age.*

"Good sir, I have been sent by the Queen of Solitude to fetch you and bring you to her.!"

"And what may I inquire is the reason?" he asked

"Sir there have been strange happenings in Skyrim and it is rumored that, after the Incarnates destructive travel through Skyrim, many people are upset at the Dunmer's affection for her. The queen has been watching you and noticed you and your companies strength and leadership and wants you to help quell the riots"

*Orion eyed the boy suspiciously wondering if he was just jesting*

"alright then, how do you plan for me to get there?"

"Well sir the same why I did, there is a boat docked a short distance on the Odai near the Odai plateu. From there we shall hit the high seas!"

"Yes...and how long did it take you to get here?"

"Well sir this ship is by far one of the fastest in northern Skyrim, it took me but one day!"

*Orion looked around at the borishness of the place*

"Yes well there isn't anything happening here, FINE! I shall go to Solitude...it might be interesting"

"Great!" said the boy

"Yes...well give me some time to gather my things..."

"Of course...I shall wait down by the south entrance of Balmora when you are ready"

*The boy quickly hurried out of the hall.*

Hmph I wonder if anyone wants to go with me to Solitude...

*He lay back in his chair and sipped on some Dock...*

"I suppose everyone is too busy to worry about a little thing such as this, but I'm so bored I myswell go."

*He gets up and heads toward the door....

Sundas, 19th of Evening Star

Yet again I find myelf on the path, yet the road I walk is not one that has seen many feet, well worn paths lead to weary destinations. I go as my feet doth tred, and follow where the path doth lead. The path unseen, the road passed by.

I have bathed naked in great river Odai, which extends southwardly from Balmora. Whilst it find the southern sea it's destination I know not yet, but time makes all things clear. With the night comes promise of the dawn.

I have cut my hands on sharp rocks ascending the high precipices. I have stood in awe at the silent majesty of the night-tuned, star-noted symphony from atop the high peaks.

And I go now ever onward, the ground below, and the sky above.

Tris: Menevia

It's a long walk from Wayrest to Sutch for a man with only one foot. He needed a boat, or a carriage. His money took him into Menevia. He was heading, more or less, for the coast.

His mind was insulating him from thinking too much at any one time; or maybe Stendarr was finally repaying him for all those septims and prayers. He had a number of bad falls before he started to understand that his foot really wasn't there, no matter how much it felt as if it was sometimes. He steadfastly refused to think of Ciel, except as he had seen him last, smiling, concerned, heroic. He had a dream of shaking Ciel's hand, in which the hand came off at his touch, like the hand of a dressmaker's dummy. But then he woke up and put it firmly out of his mind.

He still looked like a young nobleman, with a nobleman's clothes. But he was starting to smell bad, and his hair was limp and oily. If he bathed, he would have to see his own body naked, and he couldn't bear that just yet. There were certain advantages to being a cripple; people's expectations were lower. His travelling companions in the carriage did not expect conversation from him. A young woman gave him a watery, sympathetic smile. He knew the type. He was handsome, yes, and pathetic, yes, and she would love the opportunity to be all things to him. Well, too bad for her.

He still felt like someone performing in a play. When he reached his destination he would take off the costume and be his old self again.

It wasn't until he reached more populated areas that he started to understand that this was his reality from now on.

The carriage line ended at the border of Menevia, and if he wanted further passage he needed to pick up the Menevian carriage line here. He considered it, considered taking a boat instead. Spoke to men, looked at maps. When he stepped out of the carriage offices, someone hit him hard in the back and knocked him sprawling to the ground.

"No bodyguard, eh? Let's have your purse, rich boy."

There were three of them, local talent by the looks of it, two men and a woman. Poorly dressed but well fed, muscular, obviously old hands at knocking down cripples and robbing them. The woman was laughing.

For a moment, he was almost Mirror again. He felt a grin rise to his face. "You've made a serious miscalculation."

And then what? The Void was still there - but he couldn't rush into it. Couldn't lead them all over town in a comedy routine, making them slam into each other, swear the gods had placed a spell of confusion on them or the place was cursed. He had no sword, only a dagger. And the moment he reached for the dagger, the largest man stood on his hand.

They took his purse. And his ring, which was his father's. They tried to take the pin Doll had given him - the enameled sunburst. She had given it to him as a reward for saving Ciel's life.

"Let me take it off," he said, trying to keep his voice from shaking. "It's fragile, there's no point in breaking it."

When he had it in his hand, he threw it as hard as he could, trying to shatter it against a nearby tree. The robbers cursed, and someone kicked him in the chin, as they scrambled to find it. He could barely stay conscious but he made it back inside the carriagehouse offices. Outside, the robbers were still searching for his pin.

Tris had seen something the robbers had not seen. The pin had struck the tree, certainly. But it had never fallen to the ground. It had struck the tree and passed right through, into the Void. He could still move fast enough to put other things into the Void - just not himself.

Somewhere Outside in the Void, the enameled sunburst was falling, and now it would fall forever, for without him, no one would ever be fast enough to reach it.

The people in the carriage house were sympathetic. They helped him report the crime to the local guards, who seemed unsurprised and disinclined to pursue the matter. Probably in a town this size, the robbers were distant relatives of the guards.

They were not sympathetic enough to offer him passage without money, however. "Write home, sir," the stablemaster said. "Ask for more money."

"I can't wait that long," Tris said, biting his tongue to keep from saying that he had no home now, no money was forthcoming.

The stablemaster shook his head sympathetically. Everyone was terribly sympathetic. But not helpful.

He stood outside in the last light of evening - it was a beautiful night, for so late in the year - and considered his options. Of course. There was a
temple of Dibella in Menevia. Hadn't he paid his way through school by working there?

He was halfway to Sutch in his own mind before he remembered that no house of Dibella would employ him now. No broken vessels were allowed in the house of the goddess. What was wrong with him? Why, in spite of everything that had happened, did his stupid, hateful mind keep refusing to hold on to the truth of his new situation?

He hadn't realized he was cursing and shouting out loud until he saw a little girl burst into tears and dash across the street, away from him, into the waiting arms of her mother. Wonderful. Now he was a crazy crippled man screaming curses in the street. When he got tired enough to lie down, perhaps he'd be picked up for vagrancy. His only consolation was that at least his friends couldn't see him now.

He looked up at the sky. He could see the first stars through a faint veil of purple-tinted clouds. For a moment, nothing moved.

Twenty minutes later he was on his way to Sutch again, galloping hard on the back of a stolen horse. He had worried, for a few moments, that it would be hard to balance properly or steer with a missing foot. But he had a broken willow branch in his hand to drive the horse forward, and his balance was better than he'd expected.

He would have to ride through Wayrest. Which meant staying well clear of the main roads. He knew the border was watched, but he had confidence in his ability to find a way through.
